Mama’s Man

°Chapter 1 Sunday Dinner From Hell

Rain tapped against the windows of Miss Lorraine’s old brick house while the whole family packed into the dining room like church folk after revival service. The smell of baked macaroni, fried chicken, candied yams, and greens floated through the air, but the tension was already thick before anybody even touched a plate.
Miss Lorraine sat at the head of the table wearing her church hat like she was hosting the Last Supper herself.
“Now don’t nobody start no mess in my house tonight,” she warned, pointing her fork around the room. “I mean it.”
Lesa rolled her eyes while fixing her wine glass.
“Ain’t nobody finna start nothin’, Mama.”
Dennis sat beside her quiet as a mouse, sweating through his black button-up. Every time he looked up, Vita was staring at him from across the table.
And she wouldn’t stop.
That girl had that look in her eyes again.
The same look she gave him behind that shed six months ago at Keisha birthday party. The same look she gave him every time she snuck him into her apartment while Lesa thought he was “working late.”
Dennis swallowed hard.
He shouldn’t have ever touched Vita.
Not once.
But one drunk mistake turned into another. Then another. Then suddenly he was living two whole lives.
And now Vita was pregnant.
Pregnant.
He still hadn’t even figured out what he was gonna tell Lesa.
Vita’s cousin Monique leaned over the table smirking.
“Dennis why you so quiet tonight? You look like you seen a ghost.”
Everybody laughed.
Dennis forced a chuckle. “Nah, I’m straight.”
But Vita kept staring.
Lesa noticed it too.
“What the hell y’all keep eye-contacting for?” Lesa asked jokingly.
Vita shrugged casually. “Maybe he tired of lookin’ at old women.”
The whole table went silent for half a second.
Lesa laughed, but it was the fake kind. “Oh so now I’m old?”
“Compared to me?” Vita said. “Yeah.”
“Oooohhhh,” the cousins hollered.
Miss Lorraine slapped the table. “Y’all better hush.”
Lesa took a sip of wine and narrowed her eyes at her daughter.
Here we go again.
Them two had been competing since Vita turned grown. Clothes. Hair. Men. Attention. Everything turned into a contest.
If Lesa bought a new car, Vita wanted a better one. If Vita got attention from men, Lesa suddenly acted twenty-five again.
It was toxic. Everybody knew it.
Dennis rubbed his temples.
Lord please don’t let tonight be the night.
But across the table, Vita looked calm. Too calm.
Dangerously calm.
Then she finally spoke.
“Actually,” Vita said, setting her fork down, “I got some news.”
Lesa smirked. “What now? You pregnant?”
Dennis nearly choked on his drink.
Vita slowly looked over at him.
Then back at her mother.
“Yes.”
The room exploded.
Forks dropped. Monique screamed. One cousin yelled, “I KNOW THAT’S RIGHT.” Miss Lorraine grabbed her chest.
Lesa blinked slowly.
“Pregnant?”
Vita nodded.
Dennis felt his entire soul leave his body.
Lesa stood up excited. “Well who the daddy?”
And that’s when Vita smiled.
Not nervous. Not scared.
Satisfied.
Like she’d been waiting on this moment all year.
Dennis whispered under his breath, “Please don’t…”
Vita looked directly at him.
Then said it.
“Dennis.”
Silence.
Cold. Dead. Heavy silence.
Everybody turned toward him at once.
Miss Lorraine’s mouth dropped open so wide her dentures almost slipped.
Lesa laughed.
Actually laughed.
Girl bye,” she said. “You always playing too damn much.”
But Vita never smiled.
“I’m serious.”
Dennis couldn’t breathe.
Lesa slowly looked at him now.
“Dennis…”
He stared at the table.
“Dennis…”
His silence told the truth before his mouth ever could.
Lesa’s face changed instantly.
Confusion. Shock. Then rage.
“You dirty bitch.”
The entire room ERUPTED.
“LESA—” “OH MY GOD—” “I KNOW YOU LYING—”
Lesa launched her wine glass across the room.
It shattered against the wall beside Vita’s head.
“You BEEN SLEEPING WITH MY MAN?!” Lesa screamed.
Vita stood up too. “He ain’t YOUR man. He was mine too.”
The cousins started yelling. Miss Lorraine started praying. Dennis stood frozen like a damn idiot.
Lesa stormed around the table ready to kill somebody.
“You trifling nasty little girl!”
“Little girl?” Vita snapped. “Mama I’m twenty-three!”
“You slept with my man in my face!”
“And you always acted like every man wanted you more than me!”
Dennis finally stood up. “Listen—”
“SHUT YOUR STUPID ASS UP!” both women screamed together.
The room froze again.
Monique whispered, “This some Tyler Perry shit…”
Lesa pointed at Vita shaking with rage.
“How long?”
Vita folded her arms.
“Six months.”
The room exploded AGAIN.
Lesa looked like she might faint.
“Six… months?”
Dennis tried to speak. “Lesa, I was drunk that first night—”
“BUT YOU WAS SOBER THE OTHER FIVE MONTHS!” Miss Lorraine yelled.
“OOP—” one cousin muttered.
Lesa turned toward Dennis slowly.
“You was laying up with my daughter…”
Tears filled her eyes now.
“In my house?”
Dennis looked down.
That answer was enough.
Lesa screamed so loud the whole house shook.
Then she grabbed the nearest thing she could find—
A plate of candied yams—
—and launched it directly at Dennis’s face.

°Chapter 2 — Get Out My Mama House

“You got me ALL the way messed up!”
Lesa lunged at Dennis so fast Monique and two cousins had to grab her before she clawed his face off.
Dennis backed toward the living room with yam sliding down his cheek.
“Lesa just listen to me—”
“LISTEN?!” she screamed. “Nigga you slept with my CHILD.”
Vita folded her arms. “I ain’t no child.”
Lesa whipped around. “SHUT UP before I knock your teeth down your throat.”
“Oooohhh—” “Lord Jesus—” “Not in Big Mama house—”
The whole family was in chaos.
Miss Lorraine stood up smacking the table with her spoon. “ENOUGH!”
Everybody jumped.
Even Lesa paused.
Miss Lorraine pointed toward the front door.
“Dennis… get the hell out my house before somebody catch a case tonight.”
Dennis rubbed his face. “I know I messed up—”
“Messed up?” Monique barked. “Boy you done ruined Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Easter all in one damn night.”
“It ain’t even Thanksgiving,” another cousin whispered.
“IT FEEL LIKE IT.”
Lesa snatched Dennis’s car keys off the table.
“Oh you ain’t driving nowhere. You drunk and stupid.”
“Lesa please—”
She threw the keys out the front door into the wet grass.
“Go find ’em.”
The cousins hollered.
Dennis looked over at Vita desperately.
And that’s when the room got even worse.
Because Vita walked over and stood beside him.
On HIS side.
“I’m going with Dennis.”
The room fell silent again.
Lesa blinked slowly like her brain refused to process what she just heard.
“You what?”
Vita lifted her chin stubbornly. “I said I’m going with him.”
Lesa laughed. That dangerous quiet laugh.
“Oh… you really think this man love you?”
Vita didn’t hesitate.
“He do.”
Dennis closed his eyes.
God no.
Not now.
Lesa stepped closer to her daughter. “You stupid little fool.”
“He told me you treated him like trash.”
Dennis immediately looked up. “Vita—”
“He said you emasculated him. Said you talked down to him all the time.”
Lesa slowly turned toward Dennis.
Every word hitting like a bullet.
“He told me you only cared about money and appearances,” Vita continued. “He said you ain’t appreciate him.”
Dennis looked sick.
“Vita please stop talking.”
But she was rolling now.
“He said I made him feel young again.”
Monique whispered, “Oh this messy messy…”
Lesa stared at Dennis with tears building in her eyes now.
“So while I was at work…”
She laughed bitterly.
“You was venting to my daughter?”
Dennis tried to speak. “It wasn’t supposed to happen like this.”
“But it DID,” Vita snapped. “And I’m tired of hiding.”
Lesa looked at her daughter like she didn’t even recognize her anymore.
“You really hate me that much?”
Vita’s face hardened instantly.
“You always hated me first.”
Miss Lorraine sighed heavily. “Lord…”
And then the old woman said something that changed the whole room.
“She lying about that part.”
Everybody turned.
Lesa frowned. “Mama what you talking about?”
Miss Lorraine sat down slowly.
“You two been broken ever since Leon.”
The air changed immediately.
Lesa’s jaw tightened. “Mama don’t start that tonight.”
But Miss Lorraine kept going.
“No. It’s time the truth come out.”
Monique whispered, “Who the hell Leon?”
One auntie answered fast. “Vita daddy.”
Miss Lorraine looked directly at Vita.
“When you was sixteen… you caught your mama sleeping with your boyfriend daddy.”
The room ERUPTED.
“WHAT?!” “OH MY GOD.” “I KNEW IT.”
Lesa slammed her hand on the table. “MAMA!”
But it was too late now.
Vita laughed coldly. “See? Since we telling family secrets…”
Dennis looked completely lost.
“You slept with WHO?”
Lesa covered her face.
Miss Lorraine continued. “That girl ain’t never forgave you after that. That’s when all this competition started.”
Vita’s eyes watered now.
“You always wanted what was mine,” she whispered at her mother.
Lesa snapped back, “Because your daddy wanted everybody EXCEPT me!”
Now both women were crying and yelling.
“You stole my confidence!” “You stole MY youth!” “You always flirted with my boyfriends!” “You always acted jealous of me!”
Dennis slowly backed toward the front door.
This family had WAY deeper problems than him.
Then suddenly—
“Actually…”
Everybody looked toward Cousin Dre sitting quietly near the hallway.
The man had been silent all night eating chicken.
Until now.
Dre shrugged casually.
“I kinda already knew.”
Silence.
Dennis froze.
Lesa narrowed her eyes. “Knew WHAT?”
Dre pointed between Dennis and Vita.
“About them.”
The whole room exploded AGAIN.
Dennis stared at him. “You knew?!”
Dre nodded. “Caught y’all behind the gas station back in February.”
Dennis almost collapsed.
Vita looked irritated. “And you ain’t say nothing?”
Dre shrugged. “Ain’t my business.”
Lesa grabbed a serving spoon and hurled it across the room at Dennis.
“You had my family out here KNOWING?!” she screamed.
Dennis finally snapped.
“IT WASN’T SUPPOSED TO GO THIS FAR!”
But nobody cared anymore.
Because the damage was done.
And standing in the middle of Miss Lorraine’s dining room—
with rain pouring outside, food scattered everywhere, and years of family hatred spilling open—
Dennis realized something horrifying.
Vita wasn’t letting him go.
Not ever.

°Chapter 3 — Everybody Got Something To Say

Dennis apartment smelled like old liquor, weed, and stress.
The blinds were closed. His phone wouldn’t stop vibrating. And outside his building, somebody had already scribbled “BABY DADDY” across his car window in red lipstick.
“This can’t be my life,” he muttered.
Ever since that dinner at Miss Lorraine’s house, everything had exploded.
Lesa blocked him. Her cousins threatened him. His barber said he needed “to lay low for a while.”
And worst of all?
Vita would not stop calling.
Thirty-seven missed calls.
Fourteen texts.
One voicemail crying. Two voicemails cussing him out. Then another one whispering: “You belong to me now.”
Dennis rubbed his face hard.
He should’ve never touched that girl.
A loud knock hit the apartment door.
BANG BANG BANG.
Dennis froze.
Then he heard her voice.
“Open the door, Dennis.”
Hell no.
He stayed quiet.
Another bang.
“I know you in there.”
Dennis sighed heavily and opened the door halfway.
Vita stood there in gray leggings and an oversized hoodie, beautiful as ever… and completely unbothered.
She walked right past him carrying a grocery bag.
“What are you doing here?”
“I brought food,” she said casually.
“Vita, you can’t keep popping up here.”
She sat the bag on the counter. “Why not? I’m pregnant by you.”
Dennis looked exhausted. “That don’t mean this okay.”
Vita laughed softly.
“You still scared of my mama?”
“That’s YOUR mama!”
“And you was still sleeping with me.”
Dennis clenched his jaw.
Every conversation with her felt dangerous now.
Because she acted like none of this was wrong.
Like this was destiny instead of disaster.
Vita walked over slowly and wrapped her arms around his waist.
“You love me,” she whispered.
Dennis gently moved her away.
“No… I cared about you.”
Her expression changed instantly.
“What that supposed to mean?”
“It mean things got outta hand.”
“So now I’m just a mistake?”
Dennis didn’t answer fast enough.
And that silence cut deep.
Vita backed away hurt.
“You know what?” she snapped. “You just like her.”
“Vita—”
“No. Both of y’all use people then act innocent.”
Dennis frowned. “What are you talking about?”
Vita laughed bitterly. “You really think that first night happened by accident?”
His stomach dropped.
“What?”
She folded her arms.
“You was high. Drunk. Sad. Arguing with my mama all night.”
Dennis stared at her.
“And?”
“And I knew exactly what I was doing.”
The room went cold.
Vita stepped closer.
“You think I ain’t notice the way you looked at me before that?”
Dennis shook his head slowly. “No…”
“I wanted you.”
Her eyes hardened now.
“She always thought she could have everything. Everybody always picked her.”
“Vita stop.”
“But that night? I took something from HER.”
Dennis suddenly felt sick.
Not because he was innocent.
But because maybe he had been played too.
Meanwhile across town—
Lesa sat in her bedroom wearing a bonnet and crying while scrolling Facebook.
Big mistake.
Because somebody had uploaded pictures from Keisha birthday party.
And in the blurry background behind the shed.
you could clearly see Dennis and Vita kissing.
Comments flooded underneath.
“THIS WHY YOU CANT TRUST NOBODY.” “Her own daughter CRAZY.” “Dennis ain’t worth all that.” “Lesa too old to be fighting over men anyway.”
Lesa threw the phone across the room screaming.
Then immediately picked it back up.
More posts.
More gossip.
Somebody had even made a TikTok recap with dramatic music.
“Oh my GOD…”
Her humiliation had become entertainment.
And the worst part?
People were taking sides.
Some blamed Dennis. Some blamed Vita.
But plenty blamed HER.
“She raised her daughter like competition.” “She always flirted with young dudes.” “Lesa been messy for years.”
Lesa burst into tears again.
Then her phone dinged.
Family Cookout Group Chat (27 Messages)
Cousin Monique: I ain’t wanna say this but…
Auntie Renee: Say it.
Monique: What if Dennis ain’t even the daddy?
The chat exploded instantly.
“WHAT???” “HOLD ON.” “Who else she sleeping with?”
Then Dre sent a message that changed EVERYTHING.
Dre: Y’all remember Vita talking to that dude Marcus around Christmas?
Lesa sat upright immediately.
Marcus.
Dennis frowned from his apartment as his own phone buzzed with the same messages.
Vita snatched the phone from his hand reading the chat.
And for the first time since all this started—
she looked nervous.
Dennis caught it instantly.
“Who the hell is Marcus?”
Vita handed the phone back too quickly.
“Nobody.”
Dennis stared hard at her now.
“Nah… who is Marcus?”
Vita grabbed her purse.
“I gotta go.”
“Vita.”
But she was already heading toward the door.
And suddenly Dennis realized something terrifying.
He might not even be the father.
